6 years and 50 children later, First Discoveries is closing it's doors!

It's been wonderful friends, thanks for the amazing memories and priceless experiences.

Dear Parents,

I give you back your children, the same children you confidently entrusted in my care. I give them back pounds heavier, inches taller, months wiser, more responsible and more mature than they were. Although they would have attained their growth in spite of me, it has been my pleasure and privilege to watch their personality unfold day by day and marvel at this splendid miracle of development.
I give them back reluctantly, for having spent this time together in the narrow confines of my house, we have grown close, have become a part of each other, and we shall always retain a little of each other.
Ten years from now if we meet on the street, a light will shine in our eyes, a smile on our lips, and we shall feel that bond of understanding once more, this bond we feel today.
We have lived, loved, laughed, played, studied, learned and enriched our lives together.

I wish it could go on indefinitely, but give them back I must.
Take care of them, for they are precious.

Remember that I shall always be interested in each child and their destiny, wherever they go, whatever they do, whoever they become. Their joys and sorrows I'll be happy to share.
Please call on me if there is anything further I can ever do for any of you. As the children and I say, "You'll always be in my heart!"

Please keep in touch!
Love, Heather Ryan and Elia

To The Children Of First Discoveries.....

You are meant to be touching the lives that you touch
You are meant to be here making this world so much more than it would be without you in it
You are meant to be bringing the gifts that you bring
Singing the songs you've been given to sing
You are perfectly, wonderfully, beautifully meant to be
You are meant to be

It's a meaningful life you've been given
So live it well!

Our Bridge Crossing Ceremony

Our little Harvest Fairy gave each of her friends a special blessing to send them to their new experiences in new schools

After Crossing The Bridge We Got Great Big Hugs From All Of Our Friends

Crossing The Bridge

You Are Always In My Heart

Our bridge crossing ceremony was so sweet. I told a little bit about each child's life here at First Discoveries from the first moments they joined our class until today. We giggled at some of the funny moments we have experienced together and remembered how tiny our friends used to be and thought about how much we've changed and learned during our time here. Then each child was guided over the bridge by Elia the Autumn Fairy- from our school to great future experiences and into the open arms of their friends. Even though we won't be their teachers anymore we will always be in their hearts. Friends always, always stay friends forever. Each child promised to take care of the other children and watch out for each other always- even when they are in high school and beyond! They have spent years together, living, learning, celebrating and sometimes even fighting-all while creating priceless memories.
May they always have a special bond, remember the fun times they shared together here, and take a bit of what they learned with them wherever they go.

Some of our very favorite fall traditions are apple prints, fall mobiles and leaf rubbings! Try them at home with your children! They're easy, quick and so much fun!

This morning our preschoolers enjoyed lots of activities! We had free play time in the playroom and built a great big bridge using all of the blocks. Then we put an apple pie in the oven and went outside for a nature walk. On our walk we found a lady bug, lots of beautiful leaves, a cute little mushroom, some acorns, and a tree stump with some bugs on it.
We each took some of the most beautiful leaves to make a leaf mobile for our ceremony later.
We also practiced using the hammer and nails and worked on sawing with Ryan.

If I had a hammer.....

I'd hammer in the morning
I'd hammer in the evening
All over the land!
We enjoyed working with nails and hammers today! The children took turns hammering nails into two of our wood stumps. Once they get the hang of this they'll be able to hammer two boards together!
Tomorrow is Ryan's last day of preschool before he starts his new job. Thursday is the last official day First Discoveries will be open for business! We are planning on celebrating this great change tomorrow (Tuesday) afternoon with a bridge crossing ceremony for all of the children right after they get home from school. It will be a simple and sweet way to symbolize the crossing from one experience to another as they go their separate ways, and we go ours.
We will miss all of our preschool friends and their families very much and hope you all keep in contact with us so that we can watch your children continue to grow!

The Story of How the Apples Got Stars Within
by Madge Bigham

There was once a tiny seed sleeping in its blanket of earth all winter long until one early spring morning when Father Sun began to shine. The little seed awoke and began to stretch and yawn and stretch until its legs pushed deeper into the earth and its arms finally stretched up above the earth. Then, with one last stretch, the little seed poked its head up and looked around at the wide, wide world.
After all those long winter months in its brown earth bed, the little sprout thought it had never seen anything so beautiful as grass and flowers, and it gazed in wide-eyed wonder at the world. All day the little sprout listened to the music of the birds and the breezes and was full of wonder. She watched the clouds sail by in the blue sky and then saw the sky turn golden as Father Sun sank into his bed. And then, as everything grew dark again, the little sprout saw a wonderful sight: up in the sky diamond-stars were twinkling! She wished so much to touch one that she stretched and stretched to reach the sky. But she couldn't touch the sparkling stars. And finally she began to cry.
Suddenly, there appeared a fairy, wearing a crown a just those sparkling stars. "Why do you weep?" asked the fairy. "Because I so want such a star for my very own," answered the little sprout. "Ah, some day your wish shall be granted," said the fairy. "But first you have much work to do. You must grow strong and tall and full of love." And then the fairy vanished.
The little sprout worked hard to grow tall and strong and after some time she became a young sapling. King Storm came with his winds and rains and beat her down almost to the earth. But each time she struggled to stand tall again, and grew stronger and stronger. And after some time she was no longer afraid of him for she knew he helped her to grow.
After many visits from King Storm, one morning the little tree awoke to find her branches covered with pink blossoms. "Oh, how lovely!" she cried, and she took great care of them, day after day, until one day tiny seed babies appeared. Now the little tree was becoming a mother, and she was so busy caring for her tiny apple-children that she forgot all about her wish to the fairy. Summer came, and her children grew golden and green, and the little fairies came and kissed each little apple until it blushed bright red.
The little apple tree was so proud of her children -- she felt she could not be happier. Then suddenly the fairy with the crown of stars appeared beside her.
"I have come to grant your wish," she said, "to bring you a star from heaven for your very own." "Oh," said the little apple tree, "I no longer need a star. I am quite happy with my apple children."
"Well then," said the fairy, "I shall give my basket of stars to your apple children.
But I will hide them deep inside where only the Earth-Children can find them."
And so she did. And that's where you will find a star waiting for you: inside each apple, guarding the little seed babies for you to plant in the earth again.

Today was a pretty quiet day. The preschool children enjoyed a trip to St. Mary's park early this morning and then came back to school and had a chance to play with the doll house/farm under the willow tree- we've always loved playing under the willow tree- it's so magical!
For lunch we had a pizza party in our driveway for Milan and Amani's last day of school.
We spent the rest of the afternoon playing at Folwell together.

The Wind
by Robert Louis Stevenson

I saw you toss the kites on high
And blow the birds about the sky;
And all around I heard you pass,
Like ladies' skirts across the grass
Oh wind, a blowing all day long,
Oh wind, that sings so loud a song!
I saw the different things you did,
But always you yourself you hid.
I felt you push, I heard you call,
I could not see yourself at all
Oh wind, a blowing all day long!
Oh wind, that sings so loud a song!
O you that are so strong and cold,
O blower, are you young or old?
Are you a beast of field and tree,
Or just a stronger child than me?
O wind, a blowing all day long,
O wind, that sings so loud a song!

I'm afraid the fall wind has come to stay a while! We made wind socks and let them fly in the wind at the park this afternoon. It was a lot of fun!
