"We spend our whole lives in unconscious exercise of the art of expressing our thoughts with the help of words." Van Gogh

Thursdays are Great Artist Days at First Discoveries!
Our artist of the week this week is Vincent Van Gogh. We studied one of his most famous paintings- Starry Night. We discussed his use of colors, and thought about how Van Gogh was able to make the stars and moon "shine" through the use of the light/bright paint around the outside of the shape. We painted one at a time at the table so while the children were waiting for their turn to paint we watched a video slide show of Van Gogh's work.

And were interested to see how so many others had interpreted Van Gogh's "Starry Night" painting in their own way. We especially loved the Christmas tree and snoopy in these paintings!

We also worked on stringing our home made dough beads today- they are finally dry! Each of us are now wearing a beautiful necklace made with love! At group time today we talked about syllables and practiced clapping out our names and some words to count how many syllables each had. The children LOVED this activity and caught on so fast I couldn't believe it. We sang the song "Boom Chica Boom" and made up silly words while using silly voices. Each child had a turn to decide how we would use our voice or body while we sang the song. After group time we made a spring bird out of pine cones, feathers and paper, to go along with our new spring eggs. I let the children choose what color feathers they wanted and how they wanted their bird to look. Milan chose to make an owl, Anna chose a woodpecker, Kane chose a robin, Tanmay chose a tiny baby bird and Kennedy chose to make a hummingbird. The birds turned out so cute! A perfect decoration to welcome the spring time again.

Our lunch today was beef lasagna, string beans, apple and milk.
Snack is wheat crackers grapes nand water.
