Our hearts open wide,
light streams deep inside,
sun, moon and stars
shine on everyone.
On earth now we stand,
giving all our hand,
good day dear friend good day,
birds are in the air,
stones are on the land,
fish are in the water
and we are in creators hand

(Ask the children to recite this, they have it memorized!)

Today was a sloppy messy day! We started our morning with a walk around the neighborhood. The day flows much better if we get some fresh air right away in the morning. We love to observe the worms, dogs, birds, and people that are out and about around our school. We always find something new and interesting, especially during this time of year when all living things are growing and changing before our eyes.
When we came back to school we played with a village of boxes brought by Milan's mom, and then we played on our playground. The children were delighted to find out that the play wheelbarrow was completely filled with rain water! They spent a long time mixing sand, mud, rocks and sticks in the water making soup inside the wheelbarrow. They had so much fun! When it was time to go inside we stripped off our wet socks and pants and threw them in the wash. We got our new warm and dry clothes on and sat at the table for a flower planting session with Milan's mom Angie. She came to help us celebrate Milan's birthday! We planted marigold flowers in little pots and we tried to remember all the things that flowers need to grow. We promised that we would put our pots in a sunny spot and water them to help them grow. We also learned a little bit about making our own ice cream and helped turn the crank on the ice cream maker! We are so excited to eat the ice cream when it's ready!
Our lunch today was our friendship vegetable soup with bread, pear slices and milk. It tasted so yummy on this chilly rainy day! As we finished up with lunch we washed our dishes and put them away and joined together in the living room to celebrate Milan's 3 years on this Earth!
We sang "The Earth goes round the sun" to Milan as we lit three candles. When all the candles were lit we did 3 hip hip hoorays and we each told Milan "Happy Birthday!". We decided to save the cake and ice cream for snack since we had just had our lunch so we went downstairs and read a book and practiced our poem and sang goodnight to our friends.
This afternoon will be filled with more birthday fun as we have our birthday treats and sing happy birthday to Milan and have him blow out his cake candles! Then we plan on observing our tadpole a little bit and documenting his first day at First Discoveries! He came in the mail today and is really cute! :) We are looking forward to watching him grow and change and learning all about frogs and tadpoles.
I'm sure we'll get some outdoor play in too before it's time to leave school in the evening, the children are dying to get back to their mud soup that's waiting for them in the backyard! We really love these wet spring days!
