Today we started the morning with reading a paragraph of facts about ants and discussing it. Then we drew a picture of ourselves holding something really big and heavy to compare humans with ants - because ants can carry up to 50 times their body weight!
Then we made a little science experiment to study what type of food ants prefer.
We set up 4 different kinds of food on plastic tupperware lids filled with- sugar, seeds, rice cereal, and corn chips. We set them equal distances away from the huge ant hill that is in our yard and waited to find out if the ants ate more of one type of food than the other.
We went to Folwell park to play and had lots of races to get some energy out and then it started getting really dark and we heard that a big storm was coming so we quickly ran home and got everything ready for a storm! Ryan ordered a movie online -Free Willy- and the kids and I got our sleeping bags and blankets and pillows set out in the living room while Ryan went down the street to get Macdonalds for lunch. We were totally prepared to be stuck inside for a long time but the storm passed really quickly with just a bit of rain and thunder. Unfortunately the rain kind of messed up our science experiment as all the food bits were washed into the grass- we'll have to try that one again next week! The children really enjoyed the movie "Free Willy". It was fun to have a picnic lunch on the floor with our sleeping bags and blankets and watch a new movie.

Sounds fun. Yesterday at the rock wall at Quarry Hill, we watched 2 ants carry half a dead cricket straight up the steep rock face. The kids thought it was cool. I was completely blown away by their strength and perseverance!
