Dear First Discoveries Parents-
In the next couple of weeks, our class will be learning all about all different types of safety- fire safety, home safety, outdoor safety, healthy choices etc. We will learn how to tell if a situation is a true emergency and who to contact and how to contact someone for help. We will also touch on stranger safety a bit, as this is a hard one for preschoolers to understand. Please follow up with these subjects at home by reading books or doing roll play type of situations with your child. Practice a fire drill at your home and make sure your child knows what he/she would do if there was a fire in your home. Please make sure to specifically tell your child NOT to hide from fire fighters or police officers if they come to help them. Preschoolers are known to hide from rescue crew's because their outfits look scary and they are unsure what to do in a strange situation. We talk about and practice these situations A LOT, so that we know just what to do in case of an emergency!
We are also asking that parents work on having their child learn their own full name, their parent’s full names, and one main phone number in case they are ever separated from adults or need to be the person calling for help in an emergency.
Please also give us the names/phone number you are helping your child memorize. These days with so many different home situations and phone numbers we want to make sure we are on the same page so we don’t confuse your child!
If any of you personally know a police officer, fire fighter, EMT, that may be able to do a classroom visit please let us know! We are hoping to visit the fire station with the oldest children of the class (or maybe everyone together depending on the transportation) sometime soon as we can ride the city bus to the downtown fire station pretty easily. This is a very fun and exciting preschool unit (one of our favorites!)and we can’t wait to learn all about keeping our friends and family safe and healthy!

Ethan will be so excited to see the fire trucks, and he has been asking for quite awhile to ride on the city bus, so he will be so happy to do that!
