Mollie and Lulu

Today started out as one of those terrible awful no good very bad days. Our poor dog Mollie was suffering a lot last night with a very fast growing tumor that appeared just a couple of weeks ago. It was apparent that she wouldn't make it through the day- NOT a way to start out your day!
Mollie was our resident "reading" dog, she loved having the kids read to her and she listened patiently and quietly during each story. She loved to just sit down and watch the action going on around her, she loved the pats, hugs and kisses she got from the kids and was never bothered by their rough love. She was the most appreciative of all of our animals, she was so thankful for her comfy bed, her food, an occasional bone to chew on. She loved her family and loved her Papa the most. She had a beautiful loving smile.
She will be missed!
However, the day went on! With a bunch of happy, bouncing kids, you can't feel sad for too long! We had a Vietnamese New Year party to go on with and Elia was soooooooooo looking forward to that! She is so proud of Vietnam and loves to show off her special things. We dug through her very special box of mementos from our trip to Vietnam and set many of her treasures out on the dining room shelves for her friends to admire.
Then we called her friends upstairs and sat down to a meal of noodle soup, vegetable fried rice, egg rolls and some Vietnamese treats- coconut cookies, sweet potato candy and cashew nut crackers. The children loved listening to the books "Ten Mice For Tet" and "Vietnamese Fables of Frogs and Toads". Elia modeled one of her Vietnamese dresses and played her Vietnamese instruments and I modeled the Vietnamese dragon mask! The children thought it was great! We looked some Vietnamese coins and dollar bills, wooden dolls, fancy beaded shoes and coin purse, a woven bag, the South Vietnamese flag (where Elia was born) and the American Flag, and some books with Vietnamese words in them. The children were really very interested in everything we looked at and talked about! Kennedy even told me that she was born in Vietnam too! ;)
We practiced saying
"Chúc mừng năm mới!"
Happy New Year!
We had a little while left until it was time to take our nap so we listened to the drums of the dragon dance and watched some really great dancers doing a dragon dance. The dragons look so real but we were surprised to find out that there are really two guys or girls under the dragon mask and body. They move together so perfectly that it's easy to forget that they are really just people and not real dragons. We watched some Vietnamese children's songs by Xuan Mai a favorite Vietnamese singer- and then we quickly got out our mats and snuggled into our blankets for a rest.
When we wake up we'll have a couple more Vietnamese snacks and some free play/free art time before it's time to go home.
