Smoke Chant
If you don't want to choke
Crawl under the smoke.
Get down on the floor
And head for the door !

We did this smoke chant after we read our book "Firefighters to the Rescue" The children LOVED it, we clapped it out many times in a row. The children had a great discussion about staying low and crawling to get out of the smoke that is up in the air, and about being calm and quiet if there is a fire drill or real fire. If we all go crazy and run around we won't be able to listen to directions and might get ourselves into a dangerous situation!
We listened to our school fire alarm as well today. I'm not sure the children had really ever heard it before as we typically don't practice a fire drill with the alarm on. We'll be practicing fire drill's all week this week, the children are really looking forward to being surprised with a little fire drill when they're in the middle of their work or play.
We've also got a potential police officer visit and a police dog visit! Thanks so much for the parent participation, the children (and teachers!) are so excited about this unit!
There is an awesome coloring/story book that covers fire fighters and their equipment here. We printed a copy to read to our class and color as a group project- but it was just too many pages to print one out for each child. I highly recomend printing it out yourself so that you and your child can read it together and have some discussions about fire safety at your home.
