It's an Apple Crisp Kind of Day

Making apple crisp. This recipe came from "The Waldorf Kindergarten snack Book" and uses maple syrup to sweeten rather than sugar.
Cut cut cut your apple, cut cut cut your apple, cut cut cut your apple. Put it in the pan!

Our strong helpers carried the finished pan of apple crisp to the kitchen to be put into the oven

Today was such a busy day! This morning our preschoolers helped to make and bake apple crisp. I wish I would have had the video camera going this morning when Ryan first cranked the apple core/peeler, the children screamed with delight over the spinning apple with peel flying around! They were so surprised, and thought it was the greatest machine ever. It was very cute! I'm not sure they remembered doing this last year! We'll get out the apple peeler a few more times in the next week because it's just so much fun!
The children practiced chopping apples and measuring the ingredients for the apple crisp topping. They thought it was so funny that one way to measure is a "pinch". We all had a chance to add a pinch of salt to the bowl. Each child is given a partner to work with on cooking projects- we share a chair, and usually share a plate or cutting board (good thing they are so little, they don't mind being close together!) Dru and Sophia were partners today and had a big plate of apples to chop to put into the apple crisp. They are pretty good choppers, but they are also both pretty good EATERS! They ate their entire plate of apples while the others were chopping and adding ingredients to the bowl they just munched away. At one point I said "Sophia, don't eat all of the apples!" And she took the apple out of her mouth and put it back onto her plate. Thanks Sophia- but you can eat it, we don't need that one!
While our apple crisp was baking we went out on a walk to collect leaves for a leaf weaving project. The wind and rain had blown some of the beautiful fall leaves off of the tree's this morning so we gathered our collecting basket and went in search of the most beautiful leaves in the neighborhood. We found a ton of different colored leaves, in all different shapes and sizes. We also saw a few worms, seeds, and some kind of creature eggs on some of the leaves. We also found a big mushroom with some small ones around it! We picked the large mushroom to add to our creation but left the little ones so the tiny gnomes can have a place to hide from the rain.
When we got back to school I helped the children weave the leaves through the string on our circle loom and we hung the finished product on the dining room wall for a perfect fall decoration.
