We had another fun day in the water today! We started this morning with a book called "Bugs are Insects". We talked about the differences between insects and arachnids and played a guessing game to try to remember the differences. We learned that insects have 6 legs and 3 body parts. Many people think that bug and insect mean the same word but they are actually different. A bug is an insect with a mouth like a beak and a head that forms a triangle. A ladybug isn't actually a bug, it's a beetle! Beetles are insects with two pairs of wings. One set on top that is hard and you can not see though them, the second set of wings are clear.
After we read our books and sang our good morning song we sat at the table to draw a picture of an insect. The children could make up their very own insect or they could draw one that they were familiar with already. The drawings were really great- I'm surprised at what detail some of the children include in their drawings! We have some really great artists in our class!
The oldest children practiced writing "Insects have 6 legs and 3 part bodies"
After that we got our swimming suits on and went out to play in our sprinkler. This time we got out the little ring sprinkler and it was a huge hit with every age group. The little ones loved it because the water didn't move and didn't go above their heads, and the older ones loved it because they could play with buckets of water and the plastic animals. Everyone played really nicely for a LONG time!
We had a picnic lunch outside of mac and cheese, corn, and bagel with butter with milk and water to drink. The children also had animal crackers as a morning snack.
