Elia holding baby bull snake

Today we started our reptile and amphibian learning unit. If you have any books about reptiles or amphibians -especially that focus on snakes and turtles- we'd love to borrow them from you for a week or two! We LOVE animals at our house but especially love snakes! We have tons of fun activities lined up to study all about many different kinds of reptiles and amphibians, the children will be thrilled!

This afternoon the children will be making their own egg carton turtle and will be reading the book "The Slow Race" about a race between a talkative turtle, and a slow snail. If you haven't seen this book/puzzle set I highly recommend checking it out! It's amazing. As it reads on amazon.com, "The story was designed to introduce some of the ways in which three simple shapes can be organized to form a wide variety of people, animals and objects. This is not only fun, but also deeply educational, as it increases the capacity for both creativity and geometric thinking. While reading the story, children and adults alike arrange and fit the blocks in the shapes pictured. After reading the story a new story of ones own can be made by tracing new shapes on paper and creating ones own book. From flowers to animals to the moon, the creation of objects is limited only by the imagination. " This is such a wonderful way to bring a story to life, to use the imagination, and to open the mind to view objects with creativity.
