Today we had a slow day. We played on the playground, watched a show, ate peanut butter sandwiches and read stories. It was a good way to end our very busy week!
Early this morning we had a visitor come with her newly adopted baby from South Korea. He was so adorable! I think all of our hearts melted at his sweet little smile. Since the subject of adoption came up we had a little bit of a chat about our adopted friends and how they joined their families. It's so neat to see so many different families in our school!

Tanmay brought an article about the King Cobra today so we learned all about the fangs, head, and habitat of the King Cobra. We also looked at the map and found the countries that King Cobra's are found in- Bangladesh, India, Burma, Thailand, Cambodia, Laos, Vietnam, Malaysia, Indonesia, China and the Philippines. We made sure that all of the children understood that King Cobra's aren't found in Minnesota so they don't need to worry about them when we walk "over the mountain and through the woods"! We compared the King Cobra to other snakes- the Coral Snake, Death Adder, and the Green Mamba which all are in the same snake family but are very different in appearance and habitat.
The children sing their story time song and we read by candlelight everyday before nap. Today the book was "Grandmother's Stories- Wise Women Tales from Many Cultures" It's a fun book with lots of stories from many different countries. Today's story was called "The Old Woman who was not Afraid". It's a Japanese folktale. In the story the old woman finds a magic spoon that makes the rice in her pot multiply, each time by 10's. We practiced counting by 10's up to 50 a few times while we read and then when the book was finished we counted all the way up to 100 by 10's. The children were REALLY good at counting by 10's- even the youngest kids caught on!
Our group game was a game of catch with a twist. Each time a child caught the ball he/she had to tell the group one animal that falls into the amphibian or reptile class. They were all really good at this game too, and we had quite a few really creative answers, not just the very common reptiles and amphibians! Even Sophia got into it and shouted "MONKEY!" when the ball was thrown at her. It was so cute!
After nap time we are making ice cream! Jayme and Dru brought an ice cream maker to share with us for the day- it will be so fun and a great yummy treat for a warm Friday afternoon!
